A golden retriever is the easiest dog in the world to photograph badly and one of the harder ones to make a portrait from. The coat is warm, the light in most phone photos is warm, and the face dissolves into an even gold blur. What fixes it is contrast, not a better camera: a photo in shade, or against a darker background, gives the muzzle and the eyes an edge to sit against.

Before you order: the photo
- Shade, not sun. A golden photographed in direct sun reads as one pale shape. Under a tree, or in a doorway, the head keeps its edges.
- Head and chest, not the whole dog. We crop to the face; a full-body shot leaves the head too small to carry the ears and the eye.
- Eyes open and in focus. That is the one thing that cannot be recovered. If the best photo has one eye closed, send a second so we can see the shape.
- Say what colour the coat really is. Phone cameras warm a golden up. One line from you saves a round of design.
If the only photo you have is a sunlit one from six years ago, that is still the right photo to start with. Send it before you order and we will tell you what it can and cannot hold — that conversation is free, and it is the point at which a portrait can still change.
