Bird people almost always send the same kind of photo: the bird on a finger, on a shoulder, on the edge of a cage. That is fine. What matters is that the eye and the beak are clear, because those two things are what make the portrait read as your bird rather than a bird.

What is different about birds

Birds are small, so the 6.5cm round plaque is usually the right size. On a larger plaque a small bird ends up floating in empty leather, which reads worse than a smaller, tighter piece.

We do not make feather keepsakes. It is the first thing people ask about and we would rather be plain about it: there is no feather chamber in anything we sell. What we do is the portrait.

Colour matters more for birds than for any other species — a green cheek is not a grey cheek. Send a photo in daylight, not under a cage lamp, and we will match the colours from that.

What you send

One photo, sent by message after you order. We look at it before we start and tell you honestly if it will not work — that is the moment to change it, not after it ships. Then we send you a photo of the finished piece for approval.

Questions people ask

Can you put a feather inside?

No. None of our pieces has a feather chamber, and we would rather tell you that than sell you something that will not do what you hoped.

My bird was tiny. Will the portrait still work?

Yes — that is exactly what the 6.5cm round plaque is for. A budgie or a lovebird fills it properly, where it would be lost on a large plaque.

Can you do a bird and a cat on the same piece?

Yes, on the 12 by 8cm two-portrait plaque. Send both photos and tell us which side each one goes on.

What if I only have a photo of the bird in its cage?

Send it anyway. Cage bars in front of the bird are common and usually workable — we will tell you before we start if they are not.
